Argentina: The Elections and the Prospects for the Working Class

On November 19, the second electoral round was held in Argentina and the result was a resounding defeat for Peronism, the party that is in government today.
With the participation of 76% of the voters, the La Libertad Avanza candidate was elected president today for the period 2023-2027. He obtained 55.69% of the votes in the second round of the elections (14,476,462 votes) against the 44.30% obtained by the candidate of Unión por la Patria, Sergio Massa (11,516,142 votes).
The elected president – the liberal and far-right Javier Milei – takes power in a more than complex situation, with inflation of more than 150% annually, without a majority in parliament and without his own governors in the provinces.
Milei did not only significantly moderate his much more incendiary speech during the first stage of the campaign, but was forced to ally with former president Mauricio Macri, whose party imploded after the first election.
It will, ultimately, be a shared government between Milei, the elected president, and Macri, the former president who will provide a large part of his officials for ministerial positions.
The new government that will take office in December will be extremely weak. This is mainly because it can barely rest on 30% of their own votes, since in the second election the masses voted against the current government, but not in support of Milei's political program. Furthermore, the economic crisis persists and it has neither a majority in parliament nor authority over the union bureaucrats.
The working class of Argentina, even the faction that voted for Milei to punish Peronism, will soon come out to fight against the adjustment and the permanent lower salary that inflation means.
The left must put itself at the forefront of these next struggles. But to do so it must definitively break with Peronism and show itself to the workers as a true alternative to the crisis and misery that capitalism produces.
Las elecciones en Argentina y las perspectivas para la clase obrera

El 19 de noviembre se realizó la segunda vuelta electoral en Argentina, el resultado fue una contundente derrota el peronismo, el partido que hoy está en el gobierno.
Con la participación del 76% de los electores, el candidato de La Libertad Avanza fue electo hoy presidente para el período 2023-2027, tras obtener en la segunda vuelta de las elecciones el 55,69 por ciento de los votos (14.476.462 sufragios) contra el 44,30 por ciento obtenido por el postulante de Unión por la Patria, Sergio Massa (11.516.142 votos).
El presidente electo, liberal y ultraderechista Javier Milei, llega al gobierno en una situación más que compleja, con una inflación de más del 150% anual, sin mayoría en el parlamento y sin gobernadores propios en las provincias.
El nuevo gobierno, no solo moderó de forma notable su discurso, mucho más incendiario durante la primera etapa de la campaña, sino que se vio obligado a aliarse con el ex presidente Mauricio Macri, cuyo partido implosionó luego de la primera elección.
Será, en definitiva, un gobierno compartido entre Milei, el presidente electo y Macri, el ex presidente que le brindará una gran parte de sus funcionarios, para cargos ministeriales.
Con apenas el 30% de votos propios, ya que en la segunda elección las masas votaron contra el actual gobierno, pero no en apoyo al programa político de Milei, una crisis económica que persiste y sin mayoría en el parlamento ni autoridad sobre los burócratas sindicales, el gobierno que asumirá en diciembre será extremadamente débil.
La clase obrera de Argentina, incluso la fracción que votó a Milei, para castigar al peronismo, pronto saldrá a luchar contra el ajuste y la baja salarial permanente que significa la inflación.
La izquierda debe ponerse a la vanguardia de esas próximas luchas, pero para eso debe romper definitivamente con el peronismo y mostrarse ante los trabajadores, como una verdadera alternativa a la crisis y la miseria que produce el capitalismo.
