Syria: The Revolutionary Offensive of the Masses Continues

The new wave of mass protests of the Syrian people continues to expand and to deepen. Popular demonstrations are taking place on a daily basis since 16 August in response to dramatically worsening living conditions after the regime lifted subsidies on gasoline and fuel oil.
However, as we did already report, the protests are not limited to economic issues but quickly assumed a political dimension, calling for the downfall of the Assad regime. People are chanting famous slogans which have become popular since the beginning of the Syrian Revolution in 2011. Likewise, demonstrators are waving the “Free Syria” flags which have become well-known at anti-regime protests in the past 12 years. (1)
According to a new report by the well-informed U.S. think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW), protests have occurred across the country in 126 locations in 8 provinces. (2) The center of the demonstrations is in the south – the province Suwayda and Daraa (the latter was the place where the Syrian Revolution started in March 2011). However, protests have also taken place in other provinces like Aleppo, Deir ez Zor, Raqqa, and Rif Dimashq provinces.
Furthermore, activists organized solidarity demonstrations in the liberated territories of Idlib – the region in the north-west of Syria which has been successfully defended by the rebels against continuous attacks by Assad troops and Russian Air Force.
The above-mentioned ISW report also indicates that the current protests have also a clear anti-imperialist component as slogans are being raised against the presence of Russian, U.S. and Iranian occupation forces.
The Revolutionary Communist International Tendency (RCIT) reiterates its unconditional support for the mass protests. As we did already emphasise, this is a crucial event as it represents the revival of the Syrian Revolution – the longest-lasting struggle in the historic process of the Arab Revolution which started in January 2011. We repeat that this event confirms the RCIT’s analysis that the Syrian Revolution – contrary to the claims of demoralised renegades – has not been defeated but is rather continuing despite all the setbacks which the masses had to suffer in the past years. The same slogans, the same flags – all this confirms that the current mass protests are part of the same process which started in March 2011.
The RCIT has actively supported the Syrian Revolution since the very beginning. (4) On 27 August, we participated in a demonstration of about 1,000 Syrian demonstrators in Vienna and were invited to deliver a speech which was enthusiastically welcomed. (5)
We call all workers and popular organizations as well as left-wing parties to join forces for an international campaign of solidarity with the revived Syrian Revolution!

Siria: Continúa la ofensiva revolucionaria de las masas

La nueva ola de protestas masivas del pueblo sirio continúa expandiéndose y profundizándose. Desde el 16 de agosto se han producido manifestaciones populares a diario en respuesta al dramático empeoramiento de las condiciones de vida después de que el régimen levantara los subsidios a la gasolina y al fueloil.
Sin embargo, como ya informamos, las protestas no se limitan a cuestiones económicas, sino que rápidamente asumieron una dimensión política, pidiendo la caída del régimen de Assad. La gente corea lemas famosos que se han vuelto populares desde el comienzo de la Revolución Siria en 2011. Asimismo, los manifestantes ondean las banderas de “Siria libre” que se han vuelto muy conocidas en las protestas contra el régimen en los últimos 12 años. (1)
Según un nuevo informe del bien informado Instituto para el Estudio de la Guerra (ISW), un grupo de expertos estadounidense, se han producido protestas en todo el país en 126 lugares de 8 provincias. (2) El centro de las manifestaciones está en el sur: la provincia de Suwayda y Daraa (este último fue el lugar donde comenzó la revolución siria en marzo de 2011). Sin embargo, también se han producido protestas en otras provincias como Alepo, Deir ez Zor, Raqqa y Rif Dimashq.
Además, los activistas organizaron manifestaciones de solidaridad en los territorios liberados de Idlib, la región del noroeste de Siria que los rebeldes han defendido con éxito contra los continuos ataques de las tropas de Assad y de la Fuerza Aérea rusa.
El informe de ISW antes mencionado también indica que las protestas actuales también tienen un claro componente antiimperialista, ya que se están levantando consignas contra la presencia de las fuerzas de ocupación rusas, estadounidenses e iraníes.
La Corriente Comunista Revolucionaria Internacional (CCRI) reitera su apoyo incondicional a las protestas masivas. Como ya enfatizamos, este es un evento crucial ya que representa el resurgimiento de la Revolución Siria, la lucha más duradera en el proceso histórico de la Revolución Árabe que comenzó en enero de 2011. Repetimos que este evento confirma el análisis de la CCRI de que la Revolución Siria – contrariamente a las afirmaciones de los renegados desmoralizados – no ha sido derrotada, sino que continúa a pesar de todos los reveses que las masas tuvieron que sufrir en los últimos años. Las mismas consignas, las mismas banderas: todo esto confirma que las actuales protestas masivas son parte del mismo proceso que comenzó en marzo de 2011.
La RCIT ha apoyado activamente la revolución siria desde el principio. (4) El 27 de agosto participamos en una manifestación de unos 1.000 manifestantes sirios en Viena y nos invitaron a pronunciar un discurso que fue acogido con entusiasmo. (5)
