Progressive Jews Say: “The State of Israel is currently perpetrating a Holocaust”

The Rabbinic Council of the US-based Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) has published a powerful statement in which it draws parallels between the horrific past of the Jews people in Europe and the horrific present of the Palestinian people in Gaza. (See the full text below.)
“Many of us have parents, grandparents and great-grandparents who survived or perished in Nazi death marches and we have all grown up in the shadow of the Nazi holocaust. The state of Israel is currently perpetrating a holocaust, the deliberate mass slaughter of Palestinian people, with weapons provided by the United States.”
They sharply denounce the crimes of the Zionist state against Palestinian women, men and children as “genocide”, “death marches”, “ethnic cleansing”, “campaign of extermination” and “crimes against humanity”. They call Nazi holocaust survivors, refugees, and their descendants to support their statement.
The JVP activists pose the alternative as follows: “We must ask ourselves who we are: will we be like the courageous “righteous gentiles” who risked their personal safety to protect and save Jewish lives during the Nazi holocaust? Or will we behave like those who “didn’t want to get involved” or joined the Nazi party enthusiastically? There is no middle ground. We implore you: join us in speaking truth and choosing life. We need everyone.”
JVP is the most prominent Jewish organisation which has been involved in activities in solidarity with the Palestinian people. Just recently, they organised a protest under the slogan “Gaza burns, and Wall Street booms”. When they blocked the entry of the New York Stock Exchange, the police arrested 200 of them.
This initiative of our Jewish brothers and sisters is a great and courageous step forward! No doubt, they will be slandered by the Zionists, once again, as “self-hating Jews” – a slur, bereft of intelligence, by hateful people. But the truth can not be suppressed and all over the world the number of die-hard supporters of the Israeli Apartheid state dwindles day by day.
To transform such mass sympathy for the Palestinian cause into deeds, it is essential that international trade unions and popular organisations organise mass actions to boycott all economic, military, cultural etc. ties with the Zionist monster so that it can no longer continue its genocide!
Long live the Palestinian liberation struggle! Smash the Zionist Apartheid state!

As rabbis we have taken on a sacred responsibility to protect our ancient tradition, to support our community, and to offer moral leadership amid crisis. We find ourselves in a horrifying historical moment. Many of us have parents, grandparents and great-grandparents who survived or perished in Nazi death marches and we have all grown up in the shadow of the Nazi holocaust. The state of Israel is currently perpetrating a holocaust, the deliberate mass slaughter of Palestinian people, with weapons provided by the United States.
The photos and videos coming out of North Gaza are a terrifying echo of all-too-familiar images of European ghettos and Nazi concentration camps in the 2nd World War. The Nazi camps were hidden from the world, but as susan albuhawa writes, “Israel is committing the holocaust of our time, and it is doing it in full view of a seemingly indifferent world.” Today we stand with our ancestors at our backs, in solidarity with our Palestinian siblings, demanding an immediate weapons embargo and an end to genocide — we will not act with indifference toward Palestinian suffering.
There is no time to waste and no room for ambiguity. We must call the Israeli government’s actions what they are — genocide. A growing mountain of documentation now accompanies the Palestinian testimony we have been receiving all year. While Zionist discourse propagates the myth that Israel must commit these heinous acts for the sake of Jewish security, we know this was never about keeping anyone safe, as the staggering death toll confirms. The Israeli military has killed, at the very least, 42,000 Palestinian grandparents, parents, babies, children, artists, leaders, poets, teachers, journalists, and doctors. Countless more lie under the rubble, not yet documented within Palestine’s destroyed healthcare system.
We call on you and all people of conscience to show up today and heed our tradition’s insistence that we speak truth – dabru emet (Zechariah 8:16), and choose life – u’vacharta bachayim (Deuteronomy 30:19). We must ask ourselves who we are: will we be like the courageous “righteous gentiles” who risked their personal safety to protect and save Jewish lives during the Nazi holocaust? Or will we behave like those who “didn’t want to get involved” or joined the Nazi party enthusiastically? There is no middle ground. We implore you: join us in speaking truth and choosing life. We need everyone.
Dabru emet, speak truth: The Israeli military is herding Palestinian men and boys into lines, and forcing them to walk toward pits. These are death marches.
Dabru emet, speak truth: The Israeli military is forcing Palestinian families to flee again and again, even as there is nowhere safe from their bombs. This is ethnic cleansing.
Dabru emet, speak truth: The Israeli military is burning Palestinians to death in hospitals and displaced persons camps. The Israeli military is burying Palestinians alive in the rubble of their destroyed homes. The Israeli military is abandoning infants to die and decompose. This is a campaign of extermination.
These atrocities are crimes against humanity, a phrase codified within international law in response to the Nazi holocaust, seeking to prevent horror of this magnitude from ever happening again. Lo ta-amod al dam re’echa (Leviticus 19:16): we must not — we will not — stand by watching endless Palestinian blood shed. So many lives can still be saved.
We must honor our ancestors who were murdered by Nazis when the most powerful nations in the world allowed genocidal violence to escalate unchecked. We must honor all our ancestors who were displaced and killed because of racist, nationalist ideologies throughout our history. We must honor our ancestors by shouting the truth to the heavens and putting our bodies on the line to stop the Israeli government’s genocide of Palestinians now. Ameinu, our people, are those who stand up to stop genocide.
Join us as we join our Palestinian allies in calling on our government to block weapons to Israel and commit to a full arms embargo now.

Los judíos progresistas de EE.UU., dicen: “El Estado de Israel está perpetrando actualmente un Holocausto”

El Consejo Rabínico de la organización Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP), con sede en Estados Unidos, ha publicado una poderosa declaración en la que establece paralelismos entre el horrible pasado del pueblo judío en Europa y el horrible presente del pueblo palestino en Gaza. „Muchos de nosotros tenemos padres, abuelos y bisabuelos que sobrevivieron o perecieron en las marchas de la muerte nazis y todos hemos crecido a la sombra del holocausto nazi. El Estado de Israel está perpetrando actualmente un holocausto, una matanza masiva deliberada del pueblo palestino, con armas proporcionadas por los Estados Unidos”.
Denuncian enérgicamente los crímenes del Estado sionista contra las mujeres, los hombres y los niños palestinos, calificándolos de “genocidio”, “marchas de la muerte”, “limpieza étnica”, “campaña de exterminio” y “crímenes contra la humanidad”. Llaman a los supervivientes del holocausto nazi, a los refugiados y a sus descendientes a apoyar su declaración.
Los activistas del JVP plantean la alternativa de la siguiente manera: “Debemos preguntarnos quiénes somos: ¿seremos como los valientes “gentiles justos” que arriesgaron su seguridad personal para proteger y salvar vidas judías durante el holocausto nazi? ¿O nos comportaremos como aquellos que“no quisieron involucrarse” o se unieron al partido nazi con entusiasmo? No hay término medio. Les imploramos: únanse a nosotros para decir la verdad y elegir la vida. Necesitamos a todos” .
El JVP es la organización judía más importante que ha participado en actividades de solidaridad con el pueblo palestino. Hace poco, organizaron una protesta bajo el lema “Gaza arde y Wall Street crece”. Cuando bloquearon la entrada a la Bolsa de Nueva York, la policía arrestó a 200 de ellos.
Esta iniciativa de nuestros hermanos y hermanas judíos es un gran y valiente paso adelante. Sin duda, los sionistas los calumniarán una vez más llamándolos “judíos que se odian a sí mismos”, un insulto carente de inteligencia, por parte de gente llena de odio. Pero la verdad no puede ser suprimida y en todo el mundo el número de partidarios acérrimos del Estado israelí del apartheid disminuye día a día.
Para transformar esa simpatía masiva por la causa palestina en hechos, es esencial que los sindicatos internacionales y las organizaciones populares organicen acciones masivas para boicotear todos los vínculos económicos, militares, culturales, etc. con el monstruo sionista para que ya no pueda continuar con su genocidio.
¡Viva la lucha por la liberación palestina! ¡Aplastemos el Estado sionista del apartheid!
