Wall Street Journal is forced to admit that large sectors of U.S. youth turn towards anti-imperialism and socialism

The Wall Street Journal has published a highly interesting article titled “Gaza Protests at Colleges Open a Generational Divide. Young activists often see the world as split between the oppressed and their oppressors—and their views are markedly different than those of older Americans”. [1]

 

The extraordinary character of this article stems both from its contents as well as from the background of the publisher. The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) is, as the name already indicates, a key organ of America’s big capital and is thoroughly dedicated to spread pro-imperialist and pro-Israel views. It has been – like nearly all Western media – a ferocious supporter of Israel’s genocidal war against the Palestinian people in Gaz.

 

Still, even such an arch-reactionary paper can not ignore the reality that the 7 October and the Gaza War have provoked huge mobilisations around the globe – in particular of young people. This wave of mass protests – from the Arab and Muslim world to South Africa, from Australia to Mexico and from Britain to the U.S. – is of no less significance than the mobilisations against the U.S. wars against Vietnam and Iraq.

 

Basically, these protests reflect a dramatic shift in the consciousness of important sectors of the masses – and in particular of youth – to the left. Such shift, in turn, is a result of the explosive character of the current historic period which opened with the Great Recession and which entered a new stage in the past years with major wars, Bonapartist attacks and mass struggles. The RCIT has characterised this as a revolutionary period of capitalist decay. [2]

 

 

 

Numbers 'don't lie

 

 

 

It is remarkable that even the WSJ feels obliged to admit that the Gaza War has provoked large sectors of youth to take a stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people and against U.S. imperialism and the Israeli Apartheid state. Furthermore, many activists can see the link between the oppression of the Palestinians and injustice in other fields.

 

“A wave of pro-Palestinian protests has swept college campuses, leading to heightened tensions, counterprotests and, in some cases, violence. The conflict has also exposed a generational divide, with many older Americans surprised at the protests’ scope and intensity. Mullen and other pro-Palestinian college demonstrators (whom the WSJ interviewed for this article, Ed.) say their activism is rooted in a deeply held conviction that the world is divided between the oppressed and their oppressors.

 

That view frames the suffering of an array of populations, they say, including low-income families being evicted from their homes, Black and brown people who encounter brutal treatment by the police, migrants turned away from safe haven at the border and, in the current conflict, Palestinians struggling to wrest control of territory from the Israelis. “Gaza is not a two-sided war,” said Mullen, who is 21. “What is happening is the resistance of the oppressed against their oppressor.””

 

Particularly noteworthy is the fact that the WSJ is forced to admit: “The protesters’ sympathy for Hamas, designated by the U.S. as a terrorist group, sometimes astonishes and rankles bystanders. Roughly half of Americans 18 to 24 years old think Hamas’s October attack was justified by grievances of the Palestinians, according to a Harvard Harris Poll. Just 9% of people aged 65 and older feel the same.”

 

This is all the more remarkable since America’s media – like nearly all others in Western countries – have blared day after day hysterical denunciations of “terrorist” Hamas in order to justify their unlimited support for the Israel’s colonial rule. All this is combined with a vicious witch-hunt against student groups which declare their support for the Palestinian cause. Likewise, actresses like Susan Sarandon and Melissa Barrera, various scientists and journalists, etc. have been sacked after they publicly stated their opposition to Israel’s genocide. But despite all such unprecedented pressure, large sectors of youth turn against the Zionist terror state and its imperialist backers!

 

It is safe to say that such strong sympathies for the militant resistance in Palestine among the youth are not confined to the U.S. They obviously also exist in all other parts of the world as the composition of many mass demonstrations visually reflects.

 

Such news can only be welcomed by all supporters of the Palestinian liberation struggle! The RCIT – including our comrades in Israel / Occupied Palestine – has always supported the Palestinian people and their resistance against Israeli occupation. In the current Gaza War – like in the past ones – we advocate the military victory of the resistance led by Hamas without lending political support to the program or all tactics of its leadership. We call for a comprehensive boycott of the Israeli Apartheid state. Sabotage all forms of military support for Israel. For strikes, protests and consumer boycott against Israeli goods, pro-Israeli political and cultural events! ^[3]

 

 

 

“Youth favours socialism”

 

 

 

There is also another revealing finding about which the WSJ article reports, referring to another study: “Nearly half of 18- to 29-year-olds favor socialism—more than those who support a market economy, which many blame for the compounding disasters they face, according to a 2022 poll from Pew Research.”

 

Since the U.S. is not known for strong sympathies for socialism throughout its history, it is safe to say that there also exist similar pro-socialist views among youth in many other countries.

 

Hence, we can say that despite the fact that “public opinion” in North America and Europe uniformly preaches the superiority of “Western values”, fewer and fewer youth give credit to such imperialist and capitalist propaganda. The ruling class, its state institutions and the media, on one side, and large sectors of youth (and also adults), on the other side – they are living in two different worlds. It is evident that since the 1920s and 1930s there has been no comparable situation where such a big gap has existed between the ruling elite and the masses. No doubt, such a historic period is pregnant with revolutionary explosions and uprisings!

 

The WSJ writes: “Young activists often see the world as split between the oppressed and their oppressors” The youth see it like this because it is the truth. Exploitation and oppression are the essence of imperialism and capitalism. More and more people recognise the class contradictions and the resulting injustice.

 

It is the responsibility of all revolutionaries to prepare for such a period in which it will be possible to overthrow the capitalist/imperialist system and to replace it with a socialist society without classes where decisions are made democratically from below to the top. A key task for this will be the building of a Revolutionary World Party which can organise the struggle for a socialist future. The RCIT is fully dedicated to this task, and we ask other revolutionaries to join forces in addressing this task!

 

 

El Wall Street Journal se ve obligado a admitir que amplios sectores de la juventud estadounidense se inclinan hacia el antiimperialismo y el socialismo

El Wall Street Journal ha publicado un artículo muy interesante titulado “Las protestas en Gaza en las universidades abren una división generacional. Los jóvenes activistas a menudo ven el mundo dividido entre los oprimidos y sus opresores, y sus puntos de vista son marcadamente diferentes a los de los estadounidenses mayores”. ^[1]

 

El carácter extraordinario de este artículo surge tanto de su contenido como de los antecedentes del editor. El Wall Street Journal (WSJ) es, como su nombre ya indica, un órgano clave del gran capital estadounidense y está completamente dedicado a difundir opiniones proimperialistas y proisraelíes. Ha sido –como casi todos los medios occidentales– un feroz partidario de la guerra genocida de Israel contra el pueblo palestino en Gaza.

 

Aun así, ni siquiera un periódico tan ultrarreaccionario puede ignorar la realidad de que el 7 de octubre y la guerra de Gaza han provocado enormes movilizaciones en todo el mundo, en particular de los jóvenes. Esta ola de protestas masivas –desde el mundo árabe y musulmán hasta Sudáfrica, desde Australia hasta México y desde Gran Bretaña hasta Estados Unidos– no es menos significativa que las movilizaciones contra las guerras de Estados Unidos contra Vietnam e Irak.

 

Básicamente, estas protestas reflejan un cambio dramático en la conciencia de importantes sectores de las masas –y en particular de la juventud– hacia la izquierda. Ese cambio, a su vez, es resultado del carácter explosivo del actual período histórico que se abrió con la Gran Recesión y que entró en una nueva etapa en los últimos años con grandes guerras, ataques bonapartistas y luchas de masas. La CCRI ha caracterizado este período como un período revolucionario de decadencia capitalista. ^[2]

 

 

 

Los números no mienten

 

 

 

Es notable que incluso el WSJ se sienta obligado a admitir que la guerra de Gaza ha provocado que grandes sectores de la juventud adopten una postura de solidaridad con el pueblo palestino y contra el imperialismo estadounidense y el Estado de apartheid israelí. Además, muchos activistas pueden ver el vínculo entre la opresión de los palestinos y la injusticia en otros campos.

 

“Una ola de protestas pro palestinas ha arrasado los campus universitarios, provocando mayores tensiones, contraprotestas y, en algunos casos, violencia. El conflicto también ha expuesto una división generacional, y muchos estadounidenses mayores se sorprendieron por el alcance y la intensidad de las protestas. Mullen y otros manifestantes universitarios pro palestinos (a quienes el WSJ entrevistó para este artículo, Ed.) dicen que su activismo tiene sus raíces en una convicción profundamente arraigada de que el mundo está dividido entre los oprimidos y sus opresores.

 

Esa visión enmarca el sufrimiento de una variedad de poblaciones, dicen, incluidas familias de bajos ingresos que son desalojadas de sus hogares, personas negras y de color que enfrentan un trato brutal por parte de la policía, inmigrantes rechazados de un refugio seguro en la frontera y, en conflicto actual, los palestinos luchan por arrebatar el control del territorio a los israelíes. “Gaza no es una guerra de dos bandos”, dijo Mullen, de 21 años. “Lo que está sucediendo es la resistencia de los oprimidos contra su opresor.””

 

Particularmente digno de mención es el hecho de que el WSJ se ve obligado a admitir: “La simpatía de los manifestantes por Hamás, designado por Estados Unidos como grupo terrorista, a veces sorprende e irrita a los transeúntes. Aproximadamente la mitad de los estadounidenses entre 18 y 24 años piensan que el ataque de Hamas en octubre estuvo justificado por los agravios de los palestinos, según una encuesta Harris de Harvard. Sólo el 9% de las personas de 65 años o más sienten lo mismo”.

 

Esto es tanto más notable cuanto que los medios de comunicación estadounidenses –como casi todos los demás en los países occidentales– han lanzado a todo volumen, día tras día, histéricas denuncias del “terrorista” Hamás para justificar su apoyo ilimitado al régimen colonial de Israel. Todo esto se combina con una cruel caza de brujas contra grupos de estudiantes que declaran su apoyo a la causa palestina. Asimismo, actrices como Susan Sarandon y Melissa Barrera, varios científicos y periodistas, etc. han sido despedidos después de que manifestaron públicamente su oposición al genocidio de Israel. ¡Pero a pesar de toda esa presión sin precedentes, grandes sectores de la juventud se vuelven contra el estado terrorista sionista y sus patrocinadores imperialistas!

 

Es seguro decir que esas fuertes simpatías entre los jóvenes por la resistencia militante en Palestina no se limitan a Estados Unidos. Obviamente también existen en todas las demás partes del mundo, como lo refleja visualmente la composición de muchas manifestaciones masivas.

 

¡Estas noticias sólo pueden ser bienvenidas por todos los partidarios de la lucha por la liberación palestina! La CCRI –incluidos nuestros camaradas en Israel/Palestina Ocupada– siempre ha apoyado al pueblo palestino y su resistencia contra la ocupación israelí. En la actual guerra de Gaza –como en las pasadas– defendemos la victoria militar de la resistencia liderada por Hamás sin prestar apoyo político al programa ni a todas las tácticas de su liderazgo. Llamamos a un boicot integral al estado de apartheid israelí. Sabotear todas las formas de apoyo militar a Israel. ¡Por huelgas, protestas y boicot de consumidores contra productos israelíes, eventos políticos y culturales proisraelíes! ^[3]

 

 

 

“La juventud favorece el socialismo”

 

 

 

También hay otro hallazgo revelador sobre el cual informa el artículo del WSJ, refiriéndose a otro estudio: “Casi la mitad de los jóvenes entre 18 y 29 años favorecen el socialismo, más que aquellos que apoyan una economía de mercado, a la que muchos culpan por los desastres que agravan. cara, según una encuesta de 2022 de Pew Research”.

 

Dado que Estados Unidos no es conocido por tener fuertes simpatías por el socialismo a lo largo de su historia, es seguro decir que también existen puntos de vista prosocialistas similares entre los jóvenes de muchos otros países.

 

Por lo tanto, podemos decir que a pesar de que la “opinión pública” en América del Norte y Europa predica uniformemente la superioridad de los “valores occidentales”, cada vez menos jóvenes dan crédito a esa propaganda imperialista y capitalista. La clase dominante, sus instituciones estatales y los medios de comunicación, por un lado, y grandes sectores de jóvenes (y también adultos), por el otro, viven en dos mundos diferentes. Es evidente que desde las décadas de 1920 y 1930 no ha habido una situación comparable en la que haya existido una brecha tan grande entre la elite gobernante y las masas. ¡Sin duda, un período histórico así está preñado de explosiones y levantamientos revolucionarios!

 

El WSJ escribe: “Los jóvenes activistas a menudo ven el mundo dividido entre los oprimidos y sus opresores”. Los jóvenes lo ven así porque es la verdad. La explotación y la opresión son la esencia del imperialismo y el capitalismo. Cada vez más personas reconocen las contradicciones de clases y la injusticia resultante.

 

Es responsabilidad de todos los revolucionarios prepararse para un período en el que será posible derrocar el sistema capitalista/imperialista y reemplazarlo con una sociedad socialista sin clases donde las decisiones se tomen democráticamente desde abajo hacia arriba. Una tarea clave para esto será la construcción de un Partido Revolucionario Mundial que pueda organizar la lucha por un futuro socialista. ¡La CCRI está plenamente dedicada a esta tarea y pedimos a otros revolucionarios que unan fuerzas para abordar esta tarea!

월스트리트저널이 "대학 내 가자(Gaza) 시위가 세대 분단을 열다"라는 제목의 흥미로운 기사를 냈다. “젊은 활동가들은 세계가 억압받는 자와 억압하는 자로 갈라져 있다고 보는 경향들이 있다. 그들의 관점은 나이든 미국인들의 관점과 뚜렷이 다르다.”[1]

 

내용뿐만 아니라 월스트리트저널이 냈다는 점에서도 보기 드문, 매우 이례적인 기사다. 월스트리트저널은 이미 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 미국 대자본의 주요 기관지로, 철두철미 친제국주의 · 친이스라엘 견해를 퍼뜨리는 것을 사명으로 하고 있다. 거의 모든 서방 언론처럼 월스트리트저널도 이스라엘의 가자지구 팔레스타인 인민에 대한 제노사이드 학살 전쟁의 맹렬한 지지자다.

 

그럼에도, 이 같은 극 반동적인 신문조차도 10월 7일과 가자 전쟁이 전 세계적으로 사람들을 ㅡ 특히 젊은 사람들을 ㅡ 거리로 끌어낸 저 거대한 대중동원의 현실을 무시할 수 없었나 보다. 아랍·무슬림 세계에서 남아프리카로, 호주에서 멕시코로, 영국에서 미국으로 이 대규모 시위 물결은 과거 미국의 베트남 전쟁과 이라크 전쟁에 반대한 대중시위 동원 못지않게 중요하다.

 

기본적으로, 이 시위는 중요한 대중 부문들, 특히 청년층 사이에서 왼쪽으로의 극적인 의식 변화가 일어나고 있음을 말해주는 사건이다. 한편, 이러한 좌경화는 2008년 대불황으로 그 뚜껑이 열린 현 시기, 그리고 지난 몇 년 주요 전쟁과 지배계급의 보나파르트주의적 공격과 대중항쟁 물결로 새로운 단계에 들어간 이 현 시기의 폭발적 성격에서 비롯한 결과물이다. RCIT는 이 시기를 자본주의 붕괴의 혁명적 시기로 성격규정 해왔다.[2]

 

 

 

숫자는 거짓말을 하지 ‘않는다’

 

 

 

이 극 반동 대자본 신문조차도 가자 전쟁이 청년층 상당 부분을 미 제국주의와 이스라엘 아파르트헤이트 국가에 반대하여 팔레스타인 인민과의 연대로 일어서도록 촉발했다는 것을 인정하지 않을 수 없었다는 것은 주목할 만한 일이다. 나아가 많은 활동가들이 팔레스타인인의 억압과 그 밖의 다른 분야에서의 부정의 사이에 존재하는 연관을 감지했다.

 

"친 팔레스타인 시위의 물결이 대학 캠퍼스들을 휩쓸며, 고조된 긴장과 대항시위로, 그리고 몇몇 경우에는 폭력으로 이어졌다. 이 충돌로 세대 분단도 드러났는데, 많은 나이든 미국인들은 시위의 범위와 강도에 놀라고 있다. [월스트리트저널이 인터뷰 한 학생 시위자인] 멀린을 비롯한 친 팔레스타인 학내 시위자들은 자신들의 운동이 피억압자와 억압자로 세계가 나뉘어져 있다는 깊은 신념에 뿌리를 두고 있다고 말한다. 자신의 집에서 퇴거당하는 저소득층 가족들, 경찰에 의해 잔학한 취급을 받는 흑인·갈색인, 국경의 안전 피난처에서 내쫓겨 돌려보내지는 이민자들, 그리고 현재의 분쟁에서 이스라엘로부터 영토를 되빼앗으려 안간힘을 쓰고 있는 팔레스타인인들 등 다양한 사람들의 고통이 그러한 시각의 배경이라고 그들은 말한다. ‘가자는 양측 간의 전쟁이 아닙니다’라고 21세의 멀린은 말했다. ‘지금 일어나고 있는 것은 억압자에 대한 피억압자의 저항입니다.’"

 

특히 주목할 만한 점은 이 대자본 신문이 다음과 같은 사실을 인정해야만 했다는 점이다. "미국이 테러집단으로 지정한 하마스에 대한 시위자들의 동정은 시위를 바라보던 사람들을 왕왕 경악하게 하고 불쾌하게 만든다. 하버드 해리스 여론조사에 따르면, 18세에서 24세 사이의 미국인들 중 약 절반은 하마스의 10월 공격이 팔레스타인인들의 현실 불만으로 볼 때 정당성을 갖는 것이었다고 생각한다. 65세 이상의 사람들에서는 단지 9%만이 이런 생각을 한다.“

 

이것이 더더욱 주목을 끄는 이유는 미국 언론이 ㅡ 서방 나라들의 거의 모든 언론들과 마찬가지로 ㅡ 이스라엘의 식민 지배에 대한 자신들의 무제한적 지지를 정당화하기 위해 "테러범" 하마스에 대한 히스테릭한 비난으로 연일 헤드라인을 도배하고 있기 때문이다. 이 모든 것은 팔레스타인의 대의에 대한 지지를 선언하는 학생 단체들에 대한 사악한 마녀사냥과 결합되어 있다. 또, 수잔 서랜던과 멜리사 바레라와 같은 배우들, 다양한 과학자들과 언론인들 등이 공개적으로 이스라엘의 제노사이드 학살에 대한 반대를 표명한 후 해고되었다. 그러나 그러한 전례 없는 압력에도 불구하고, 청년층 상당 부문은 시온주의 테러 국가와 그 뒷배 미국·유럽 제국주의에게 등을 돌린다!

 

이처럼 청년층의 팔레스타인 항전에 대한 강한 동조는 비단 미국에만 국한된 것은 아니라고 해도 무방할 것이다. 많은 대규모 시위의 인적 구성이 시각적으로 비쳐주듯이 그 밖의 세계 모든 지역들에서도 이러한 동조는 분명히 존재한다.

 

이러한 소식은 팔레스타인 해방투쟁의 모든 지지자들이 환영해마지않을 일이다! 혁명적 공산주의인터내셔널 동맹과 RCIT 점령지 팔레스타인 지부는 언제나 팔레스타인 인민과 그들의 이스라엘 점령에 대한 저항투쟁을 지지해왔다. 현 가자 전쟁에서 ㅡ 지난 모든 가자 전쟁들에서처럼 ㅡ 우리는 하마스가 이끄는 저항투쟁의 군사적 승리를 제창한다. 저항투쟁 지도부의 강령이나 모든 전술에 정치적 지지를 주지 않고 그렇게 한다. 우리는 이스라엘 아파르트헤이트 국가에 대한 전면적·포괄적 보이콧을 촉구한다. 이스라엘에 대한 모든 형태의 군사적 지지를 사보타지 하라. 파업과 시위, 이스라엘 제품에 대한 불매운동, 친이스라엘 정치·문화 이벤트에 대한 보이콧 운동을 전개하자![3]

 

 

 

"청년은 사회주의에 찬성이다"

 

 

 

이 월스트리트 기사는 또 다른 조사연구의 결과물도 보도하고 있는데, 많은 것을 보여주고 있다. "Pew Research 2022년 여론조사에 따르면 18세에서 29세 연령층의 거의 절반이 사회주의에 찬성이라고 밝혔는데, 이는 많은 이들이 자신들이 직면한 복합적인 재난에 책임이 있다고 지목한 시장경제를 지지하는 사람들보다 많은 숫자다.”

 

미국은 그 역사를 통틀어 사회주의에 대한 강한 동조로 알려진 나라가 아니라는 점에서 다른 많은 나라의 청년들 사이에도 비슷한 친사회주의적 견해가 존재한다고 해도 무방할 것이다.

 

북미와 유럽의 "여론"이 한결같이 "서구적 가치"의 우월성을 설파하고 있음에도 불구하고, 그러한 제국주의 · 자본주의 프로파간다에 신뢰를 주는 청년들이 갈수록 줄어들고 있다고 말할 수 있는 이유다. 한편에서는 지배계급과 그 국가기관 및 언론, 다른 한편에서는 상당 부문의 청년층 (및 성인들), 이들은 서로 다른 두 세계에 살고 있다. 1920년대 및 30년대 이래로 지배 엘리트와 대중 사이에 이러한 큰 간극이 존재했던 상황은 확실히 없었다. 의심할 여지없이, 이러한 역사적인 시기는 혁명적 폭발과 봉기로 가득 채워진 시기다!

 

월스트리트저널은 “젊은 활동가들은 세계가 억압받는 자와 억압하는 자로 갈라져 있다고 보는 경향들이 있다”고 썼다. 청년들이 그와 같이 보는 데는 그것이 진실이기 때문이다. 착취와 억압은 제국주의와 자본주의의 본질이다. 점점 더 많은 사람들이 계급 모순과 그로 인한 부정의를 인식한다.

 

자본주의/제국주의 체제를 타도하는 것이 가능한 그런 시기를 준비하는 것, 그리고 그 체제를 아래에서 위로 민주적으로 의사결정이 이루어지는 계급 없는 사회주의 사회로 대체하는 것, 그것은 모든 혁명가들의 책임이다. 이를 위한 핵심 임무는 사회주의 미래를 위한 투쟁을 조직할 수 있는 혁명세계당 건설이다. RCIT는 이 임무에 전적으로 몸 바친 조직으로서, 모든 혁명가들에게 이 임무에 함께 힘을 모을 것을 요청한다!
